Greetings from Spearfish SD

We arrived in Spearfish SD Monday May 17 to begin work as campground attendants at the city campground. This is one of the prettiest campgrounds we've been in. the Spearfish River runs around the campground and continues for miles through the city (of just 10,000). Our backyard (see photos) is the river and a much used recreation trail. You wouldn't believe the number of cute dogs going by. I've got to get some dog treats. Of course, none is as cute as Max Marcel Berceau, world's cutest dog.

Yesterday a deer was in our "yard." We watched it as it crossed the river and disappeared into the brush. I was really worried as this is a swift moving river with lots of rapids. Last night we saw something for the first time...turkey vultures roosting for the night. These are HUGE birds and to see them filling the branches was quite a site. The parks superintendent says mowing the grass under that tree is pretty gross. he was not as excited as we were at seeing them.

Besides being in a great location we have full hook up (water, sewer, electricity) and then some (internet and cable)!

We will start work on Thurs or Friday. I'll probably be in the office and rick on the grounds most of the time. Pretty sexist, but I don't want to rock the boat although I'd love to pilot the monster riding lawn mower they've got here.

On our way here we stopped overnight at Custer State Park, one of our favorites and were not disappointed. Had close encounters with big horn sheep, buffalo, burrows, elk, and pronghorn. Also saw a brilliant blue indigo bunting, yellow goldfinch, and a rocky mountain blue bird. There was still snow at higher elevations. We enjoyed breakfast with Sue & Phil the young fulltimer couple we met at the ballpark in Arizona who are working at Custer till November. We are 70 miles from them in Spearfish so hope to see them again while we're here.

While in Custer we went off road with the Tahoe and came out covered with mud! This after just having the Tahoe detailed before leaving.
We didn't have time to do much on the way here, but we did manage to visit the SPAM museum again in Austin MN. This is a can't miss if you re traveling I90 through southern MN.
